Triangle KA – university network and business connection process

The TRIANGLE Knowledge Alliance (KA) is a European network of universities in the field of sustainable tourism. The main aims of the Alliance are the exchange of knowledge, the execution of joint research projects and the joint development of educational programmes as well the dissemination and transfer of this knowledge into the tourism industry via partnerships with business support organisations (BSOs), destination management organisations and individual companies, often with a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The TRIANGLE KA consisted initially of four universities based in Austria, France, Germany and Portugal, formed as part of an EU-funded (Erasmus+) project, called “Tourism Research Innovation and Next Generation Learning Experience”, from 2016 to 2019. In the course of the project, 20 more universities from 19 different European countries joined the network.

In terms of governance, the TRIANGLE KA is an informal network of like-minded universities that is currently coordinated by Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (Germany). There is no formal membership, just an informal affiliation by sending a university’s profile regarding their activities in the field of sustainable tourism. Many TRIANGLE universities function as sustainable tourism knowledge hubs in their respective countries.

In the past years, TRIANGLE affiliates have worked together in a number of teaching, research and transfer projects, most notably in the ETGG2030 project. In 2021, TRIANGLE universities and their partners contributed 20 national chapters to the European Tourism SME Going Green 2030 report. Besides undertaking valuable analyses of tourism in their respective countries, the universities also provided information on their industry partner networks. In June 19-23, 2023, a joint summer school on EU sustainable tourism policies and funding programmes will take place in Eberswalde with eight participating universities from the TRIANGLE network.
